Hydrographic survey is the science of measurement and description of features which affect maritime navigation, marine construction, dredging, offshore oil exploration/offshore oil drilling and related activities.
The primary focus of hydrographic survey is the collection of water depth soundings and seabed imagery using single-beam and multi-beam echo sounders and side scan sonar. In addition to the sonar systems themselves, the quality and accuracy of the data collected is highly dependent on a range of external sensors that are used together with the sonar systems and software to provide an integrated survey system. These sensors include GPS/GNSS positioning systems, heading reference systems, sound velocity recording instruments, and vessel motion sensors.
