AML Oceanographic Supplies Key Component for Fugro’s Unmanned Geophysical Survey Vessel Development

The future of commercial surveying will undoubtedly leverage autonomous, unmanned surface vessels (USV) to map areas more accurately, efficiently, and safely than ever before. For Geo-data specialist Fugro, that aims to produce a best-in-class USV solution, the natural choice for the vessels’ automated profiling system was the Moving Vessel Profiler (MVP) from AML Oceanographic.

Fugro’s extensive experience with conventional survey vessel mounted MVPs gave them the confidence to contract AML for integration of MVP into their USV solution, currently in development with L3 ASV. “Fugro considers MVP to be a critical component for the success of our USV strategy,” said Wim Herijgers, Director Innovation Marine for Fugro.

It is anticipated that USVs will substantially increase survey productivity while reducing costs – both capital and operational. The inclusion of MVP will not only aid those goals but will also ensure optimal survey data quality due to high density of real-time SV and CTD profiles.

“The MVP is already capable of profiling automatically and continuously without human intervention. We see this adaptation of MVP for autonomous vessels as a natural progression aligned with the future of hydrographic surveying and ocean research,” added Pete Reedeker, AML’s Vice President of Deployment Systems.

Both MVP systems are scheduled for delivery in Spring 2019.
